Dedicated resources for your volunteer programme
Chapter 1:
Getting your organisation volunteer ready
The need for dedicated resources
Setting aside dedicated resources is a demonstration of an organisation’s commitment, and is important to ensure that volunteers and staff are prepared for the partnership. One important aspect to consider is to plan a budget for expenses.
Setting aside an annual budget for the allocation of volunteer expenditures
You can consider the following 3-step process:
-
Determine the types of expenses you may incur. Some common expenses include staffing, volunteer management system, volunteer training, recognition and screening and transportation. Expenditures can be further divided into operating expenditures, where the cost incurred is required for the organisation to function in its primary purpose, and capital expenditures, which are one-time expenses.
-
Determine the expected cost for each expense. This can be based on several factors such as historical expenses, the target number of volunteers, unit cost and quantity needed and feasibility based on your organisation’s revenue and funding.
-
Monitor your budget. Remember to review your budget on a regular basis and make adjustments where necessary.
