Mitigate Risks
Chapter 2:
Conducting Needs Assessment
Recognising and managing risks
Once you have identified the potential volunteer positions, you need to be mindful of the risks involved for each position and ensure that they are recognised and managed appropriately.
Conducting risk assessment to forecast potential hazards
-
Conduct a risk assessment as it is a pre-emptive measure to forecast potential hazards in your organisation
-
Identify key risks by considering several broad themes of risks
-
People (e,g, harm to servicers or volunteers)
-
Equipment / skillsets (e.g. damage to equipment)
-
Confidentiality (e.g. breach of PDPA)
-
Mission-criticality (e.g. important deadlines not met)
-
Financial (e.g. theft, mismanagement of funds)
-
Reputation (e.g. misrepresentation of your organisation)
-
Compliance (e.g. breach of code of conduct)
-
-
-
Assess the impact of key risks identified using a risk matrix. Based on the risk parameters, the likelihood and impact for each risk identified may be plotted on a risk matrix

How to establish risk mitigation strategies?
-
Task the activity to a staff instead of a volunteer, especially if the potential risk is frequent and the severity of impact is high.
-
Reduce the likelihood of risk occurrence by establishing prevention strategies throughout your volunteer programme.
-
Transfer or share the risk liability by moving some of your liability to another party. Insurance is one method to reduce your organisation's liability and here are some common insurance types:
