Reviewing and evaluating your volunteer programme

Chapter 6:
Reviewing volunteer management

The purpose of review and evaluations

Conducting regular programme evaluation allows you to identify problems and solutions, increase volunteer engagement and satisfaction, and improve efficiencies and reduce costs.

How to review your volunteer programme?

  1. Do goal setting for volunteer programs to define success. Discuss your strategic goal and expectations. To maintain organisational cohesion, include senior management and staff to discuss and come to an agreement regarding set goals.

  2. Measure your goals according to these 4 focus areas: organisation Impact, Staff Experience, Volunteer Experience and Transformation & Advocacy. Click here for more details on key considerations within these 4 areas.

  3. Decide when you will conduct programme reviews. Keep it regular. Typically, organisations can undergo reviewing processes annually.

  4. Decide the channels to collect feedback and input.

    • Dialogue Sessions with Stakeholders

    • Staff & Volunteer Surveys

    • Focus Group Discussions

    • Programme Database

    • On the ground observations

    • Experience & Lessons learnt from events conducted

  5. Develop data collection and reporting methods. Think about what data must be collected, who will be collecting them, when they must be collected, who should it be reported to and how it should be reported. Then, process the data and inputs collected and analyse them by comparing them to benchmarks. For more details on data collection & processing, click here.

  6. Determine changes & improvements to be made
